Igloo Finder

Igloos are small snow huts in cold biomes, and some have a hidden basement under the floor. Enter your seed and version: every igloo near spawn is marked on the map and listed below with its coordinates and how far it lies from spawn. Pick an entry to zoom in and see which snowy biome it landed in.

Snowy biomes only

An igloo needs snowy plains, snowy taiga or snowy slopes at its spot. Java tries one spot per 32×32-chunk region (512 blocks); ice spikes, frozen peaks and frozen oceans do not qualify, so even a big cold area may hold only a couple. On Bedrock that spot is the one temples and witch huts use as well, and the snowy biome turns it into an igloo.

Dress for the trip: strays, which shoot arrows of Slowness, replace most skeletons in snowy plains, and polar bears roam there too. An igloo on snowy slopes can sit high on a mountainside, so expect a climb.

The basement

Half of all igloos, decided by a coin flip in the generator, have a basement. Break the white carpet inside to find a trapdoor and a long ladder down. Below are a brewing stand, a cauldron, a chest with a golden apple, and two cells, one holding a villager and the other a zombie villager. The brewing stand usually holds a splash potion of weakness, which together with the golden apple is everything you need to cure him. Bedrock uses the same even split between igloos with and without a basement.

Curing the zombie villager

Throw the splash potion of weakness at the zombie villager, then use the golden apple on it while the effect lasts. It starts to shake and turns back into a villager after a few minutes; the cell keeps it out of sunlight in the meantime. Cured villagers give you lasting discounts, so it is worth breaking the cell open and leading the new villager home, or trading with it on the spot.

How can I tell whether an igloo has a basement?

Only in-game. Break the carpet on the floor: a trapdoor under it means a basement, plain snow blocks mean there is none.

Why is the igloo hard to see when I arrive?

It is only a few blocks wide and built of snow on snow. Walk to the exact X and Z from the list and look for the ice windows and the dark doorway.
