About the Shipwreck Finder

Shipwrecks are the usual first stop for a buried treasure map and some early iron. Paste a seed and choose the version to see every wreck near spawn, on the sea floor or stranded on a beach, with the closest ones listed below the map. Click a wreck to center it and see whether it lies in shallow water or out over deep ocean.

Close together along every coast

Wrecks use 24×24-chunk regions (384 blocks) and only a 4-chunk minimum gap, the smallest separation among the grid-placed structures on this site, so two of them can lie quite close together. The spot must be any ocean, or a beach or snowy beach; the second case is where beached wrecks come from, resting dry on the sand. Bedrock uses the same 24-chunk spacing with its own random numbers.

Three chests, not always all present

A complete ship has a map chest, a supply chest and a treasure chest. Many wrecks are only the bow or the stern half, or lie on their side or upside down, so one or two chests can be missing. The map chest holds a buried treasure map; the treasure chest has iron, gold, emeralds and sometimes diamonds; the supply chest carries food, TNT and occasionally enchanted leather armor. The Coast armor trim can turn up in any of them.

The hull is worth a look too. Wrecks are built from one of several wood types, oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia or dark oak, which makes them a handy supply of planks and logs when you are far out at sea, and a beached wreck can be emptied without ever getting wet.

From wreck to treasure

Open the map and follow it to the red X; the chest lies a few blocks under the sand. Hold the map in your off-hand while you sail so the marker stays in view. Quicker still, the buried treasure finder works out chest positions straight from the seed, so you can skip the map entirely.

Frequently asked questions

Are beached shipwrecks on this map?

Yes. Wrecks on beaches and snowy beaches are listed like the underwater ones. In Java they even have their own ID, minecraft:shipwreck_beached, next to minecraft:shipwreck.

I am at the coordinates but cannot see the wreck. Why?

The point marks the chunk where the wreck starts, and the hull can be partly buried in sand or gravel. Search within about 16 blocks of it; night vision or a water breathing potion makes the dive much easier.
